The City of Wilson is proud to have won the 2022 Spirit of North Carolina Award from the United Way of North Carolina in recognition of our record-breaking 2022 campaign.

The city was one of four local companies to receive the statewide award during an awards ceremony on Friday, March 3, at Wayne Community College in Goldsboro. The others were Bridgestone Americas, Inc. – Wilson Plant; Purdue Pharmaceuticals, L.P.; and Stephenson Millwork Co.

The award was given to companies that demonstrated a dedication to community service through their fundraising, volunteer, and advocacy efforts.

“The Spirit of North Carolina Award shines a light on our incredible partners, who are supporting United Way’s work and helping us achieve our goals,” said Assistant Director Betty Baker. “Congratulations to all the winners who have collectively made a huge impact in the lives of our neighbors across the state.”

“We are honored to have all of these businesses as key stakeholders for a shared future where every person in our community has opportunities to thrive and reach their full potential,” said Charles Jeffers, United Way Campaign Chair.

The city’s campaign in November 2022 collected $135,952 in cash, checks and payroll deductions to the United Way and its partner agencies. The total was more than $3,700 more than 2021, which had been the record amount in more than 60 years of campaigns.

The campaign is completely organized and run by employees. The 2022 co-chairs were Bernadette Whitley and Matt Shaw.
