PRESS RELEASE

On January 19, 2023 the Edgecombe County Sheriff’s Office received a phone call from Edgecombe County Public Schools to report a sexual assault that had occurred at North Edgecombe High School in Leggett, NC.  The victim in this case reported to a staff member that she had been sexual assaulted by a teacher on campus.  Detective S. Shaw started an investigation in to this case immediately after being notified.  The school system was also conducting their own investigation into this matter.  The teacher in question is Justin T. Tyson of Farmville, NC.  It was determined  through the investigation that charges would be taken out on Mr. Tyson for 3 counts of Statutory sex offense with a child 13,14,15 years of age and defendant is at least six years older then victim.  

On Tuesday January 31, 2023 Justin T. Tyson was taken into custody at his residence by the Edgecombe County Sheriff’s Office along with the assistance from the Pitt County Sheriff’s Office.  Mr. Tyson was taken in front of a Magistrate and served with the warrants.  Mr. Tyson was given a $100,000 secured bond and placed into the Edgecombe County Detention Center.
