At the end of June, Evelyn Braswell will retire from Wilson Medical Center after 55 years of service. Braswell began her career at the hospital right out of high school, having not attended college. “I can’t believe it has been 55 years, because all I ever wanted was a job,” she said.
Wilson Medical Center holds personal significance for Braswell as it is where her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were born. It has also been a place that provided care for her family over the years. “It’s a place that has taken care of my children and husband when they were sick, and I have been cared for here as well,” she shared.
Throughout her tenure, Braswell worked in various departments including dietary, radiology, and Health Information Management since 1980. She valued the balance between work and family life that her job allowed. Reflecting on times when her son needed medical attention for asthma symptoms, she appreciated the support from doctors who encouraged her to bring him in whenever necessary.
Braswell expressed gratitude for the memories made during her time at Wilson Medical Center. “Everything has been full of great memories here,” she noted. Married in 1964 to Kenneth Lee Braswell—the same year the hospital opened—she looks forward to spending more time with family and friends post-retirement.
While planning some home improvements with her husband and daughters’ help, Braswell anticipates missing her colleagues but wishes them well. She acknowledged how her job supported her family’s needs over the years: “My job has provided for the needs of my family, and I cannot complain.”
As she prepares to leave Wilson Medical Center at age 82 feeling good about herself and grateful for God’s guidance throughout her journey, Braswell concluded by saying: “I wish Wilson and the hospital well.”
Evelyn Braswell will be honored with a retirement reception on Tuesday, June 24 at Wilson Medical Center.
