U.S. Census Bureau estimates show the older population in the U.S. continues to expand, while younger age groups decrease. The American population ages 65 and over grew by 13% between 2020 and 2024, as the number of those under 18 dropped by 1.7%. Over the previous century, the older population has risen sharply, from 4.9 million in 1920 to more than 61 million in 2024.
A 2021 research brief estimates that close to half, or approximately 28 million, of these individuals may require long-term care services. Furthermore, it indicates that over one-third could ultimately need nursing home support.
“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, an insurance education organization. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
