Wilson Medical Center holds a special place in the heart of Ralph Pierce Jr. Recently, after experiencing a health scare, Ralph was reminded of his mother, Helen Rivers Pierce, who was a nurse at the center for 27 years. Known for her compassionate care, Mrs. Pierce worked nights and often provided words of assurance and prayers to her patients.
Inspired by the care he received, Ralph decided to express his gratitude by delivering daisy bouquets to three nursing units at Wilson Medical Center. “Nurses hold a special place in my family,” Ralph stated. “This honored my mom, too. Nurses provide a service. I don’t downplay doctors and therapists – they are all part of it. LPNs and CNAs are all part of a team.”
Ralph’s connection with Wilson Medical Center extends beyond his recent experience; both his brother and sister have been patients there as well. His sister Susan Pierce received what he described as top-notch care.
Ralph cherishes many memories from the hospital, including helping his mother study for exams when she began nursing school at age 50 and enjoying meals with his parents in the cafeteria. He keeps a picture of them holding hands on the hospital campus as a reminder.
“The nurses here are caring and kind,” Ralph expressed. “I tell them all, ‘You aren’t in it for the money. You are in the position because you love people.’ That’s also why I shared the daisies. I needed this, too.”
