A new bill filed by State Rep. Dante Pittman in the North Carolina House seeks to provide funding for various public projects aimed at improving infrastructure and community services in Wilson and Nash counties, according to the North Carolina State House.
The bill, filed as HB 739 on April 2 during the 2025 regular session, was formally listed with the short title: ‘Funds for Wilson & Nash Counties.’
The following is our breakdown, based on the actual bill text, and may include interpretation to clarify its provisions.
In essence, this bill appropriates $61.3 million in nonrecurring funds from the General Fund for the 2025-26 fiscal year to support various public projects in Wilson and Nash counties. The allocations include $2.5 million for the Town of Lucama’s water infrastructure, $4.5 million for Stantonsburg’s water and sewer projects, and several grants to Wilson County: $5 million for volunteer fire departments, $15 million for school construction, $20 million for a new courthouse, $800,000 for the Sheriff’s Office Training Center, $1 million for Narcan distribution in schools and libraries, $8 million for the Wilson Housing Authority, and $3 million for the Wilson Ride Program. Additionally, $1.5 million is designated for constructing a new police department in Sharpsburg. The act takes effect July 1, 2025.
Pittman proposed another 11 bills during the 2025 regular session.
Bills in North Carolina follow a multi-step process before becoming law. A lawmaker starts by filing a bill, which is assigned to a committee for review. The bill must be read three times in each chamber. If one chamber changes the bill after the other passes it, both must agree on the final version. Once both chambers approve the same bill, it goes to the governor, who has 10 days (or 30 if the legislature is not in session) to sign, veto, or let it become law without a signature.

Pittman graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2018 with a BA.
Pittman, a Democrat, was elected to the North Carolina State House in 2025 to represent the state’s 24th House district, replacing previous state representative Ken Fontenot.
