An Edgecombe County bridge is about to take on the name of a trio of fallen deputy sheriffs.
The McNair Bridge Road bridge overlooking the U.S. 64 bypass in Tanoro is slated to take on the name "Deputy H. Webb, Deputy T. Cone and Deputy D. Manning Bridge." All three officers were from Edgecombe County and died in the line of duty.
Manning perished in a crash in 2018 while trying to pull over a drunk driver. Webb was shot and killed more than 50 years ago serving a warrant, and Cone was killed when his patrol car was struck by a drunken driver 19 years ago.
In addition, the new bridge currently under construction over the Tar River is set to be named the “Katie and Karo Edmondson Bridge” after the farming couple who operated a general store on State Route 42 for more than four decades.
The bridges are slated to be officially dedicated this year after the Edgecombe County Board of Commissioners' formal name change request was approved in late 2019.
