Wilson County issued the following announcement on Feb. 21.
Official Statement from the Wilson County Board of Commissioners
Every four years, Wilson County citizens elect seven County Commissioners.
Upon election and before serving, these Commissioners must first take their Oath of Office. Each commissioner does “solemnly swear to support and maintain the Constitution and laws of the United States, and the Constitution and laws of North Carolina not inconsistent therewith, and endeavor to support, maintain and defend the constitution of said state, not inconsistent with the Constitution of the United States, according to the best of my knowledge, skill and ability, and that I will faithfully discharge the duties of my office as a County Commissioner for Wilson County, so help me God.”
This oath is comprehensive and legally binding. Our oath applies to the entire US Constitution and North Carolina Constitution and all amendments thereto. It is our job to ensure that county government operates in accordance with this oath.
Every commissioner has also expressed their commitment to the rights of citizens in Wilson County to keep and bear arms. All amendments to the US Constitution have equal standing as the law of the land. To single out one particular amendment could be construed by some as elevating that amendment to a rank superior to others.
Supporting, maintaining and defending all of the terms of the US Constitution and the North Carolina Constitution is part of what we do as elected officials serving under the oath we all have taken.
