CITY OF WILSON: COVID 19/Coronavirus News and Updates as of May 27

Coved 19 1000x667

City of Wilson issued the following announcement on May 27.

The continued safety and security of the Wilson community is the City’s top priority. City leadership is working in partnership with the NC Department of Health and Human Services and the Wilson County Health Department on planning for COVID-19. See COVID-19 Information for the Wilson Community for expanded content of the City's preparation and response.

UPDATE 5/27/2020

The health and safety of Wilson citizens and employees remains the primary focus of the City’s phased re-opening. City Hall, the Operations Center and the Customer Service Center will remain closed to walk-in traffic during Phase 2. We will continue to adapt to the ongoing guidance provided by the NC Department of Health and Human Services.

Parks and Recreation Facilities and Programs

All city parks remain open. Playgrounds and park bathrooms will remain closed through Phase 2. Shelters are available for use if social distancing requirements are met and groups are less than 25 people. Through Phase 2, shelters will be available on a first-come-first-served basis and shelter rentals will not be allowed. No one with a fever and/or cough should enter a park.

Wedgewood Golf Course remains open, although gatherings are limited to 10 people indoors and 25 people outdoors.

Recreation Centers remain closed through Phase 2 and all exercise classes are cancelled until further notice. Check the Parks and Recreation Facebook page for information about online classes.

We are hopeful we will be able to hold some athletic programs this summer. We are reviewing the recent guidelines for youth sports programs and determining how we can deliver a safe experience for young athletes.

We were required to make many tough decisions about summer Recreation programs. Our priority must remain the health and safety of our participants.

Pools

The Recreation Park Pool and Reid Street Pool will remain closed through Phase 2. After reviewing the guidance provided for operating pools, we are not confident we can maintain the health and safety requirements while delivering an enjoyable experience for swimmers. We will re-evaluate this decision once North Carolina moves closer to Phase 3 of reopening.

Summer Camps

Summer Day Camps will not operate during Phase 2. After reviewing the guidance provided for operating day camps, we are not confident we can maintain the health and safety requirements while delivering an enjoyable experience for campers. The nature of our camps and the facilities we use make it difficult to hold camp safely. We will re-evaluate this decision once North Carolina moves closer to Phase 3 of reopening.

Cancellations and Postponements

No city events will be held until Phase 3 reopening. This includes the First Fridays on the Lawn concert series, which has been cancelled for July and August. We will re-evaluate the remaining events as we move into Phase 3.

City Council meeting formats are being adjusted based on the latest COVID-19 impacts and DHHS recommendations. Locations and formats of future meetings will be posted on the City’s website.

City Boards and Commissions meetings are being transitioned to virtual meetings.

Customer Service and Utility Bill Payment

The Customer Service Center is closed to walk-in customers. All lanes of the drive-thru will remain open during regular business hours, Monday – Friday from 8:30 a.m. until 6 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. until noon. One lane will be designated for new accounts and customer service questions.

We encourage all of our customers to use online and telephone payment methods if possible. Bills can be paid online at www.wilsonnc.org or through the automated system at 252-399-2200. Additional ways to contact Customer Service can be found under "Additional Resources" to the left of this message.

Mayor Stevens' weekly COVID-19 update to the Wilson community includes information about Phase 2 reopening, the City’s Memorial Day ceremony and an announcement of the “My Brother’s Keeper” program through the Wilson Chamber of Commerce. The state enters Phase 2 reopening at 5 p.m. on Friday, May 22.
