City of Wilson issued the following announcement on Nov. 2.

Bad news grabs the headlines, good news often is overlooked. That’s why we are bring back Tuesday Good News Day through the end of the year – to spotlight stories, people, groups and things you need to know and that are making Wilson a little nicer place to live.

Bill Bass Receives Leadership Service Award

You see City of Wilson trucks at work all over town, fixing potholes, running trash and recycling routes, doing all the little (and big) projects that make our lives easier.

Now the man orchestrating all that work has been named one of the best in his field. The American Public Works Association – North Carolina Chapter recently presented the Robert S. Hopson Leadership Service Award to Wilson’s Public Works Director Bill Bass.

The award recognizes a North Carolina public works official for outstanding service and meritorious achievement in local government service.

“Throughout his time at the City of Wilson, Bill has been a mentor to those working directly for him and to those working around him,” said the award nomination. “His ‘hands on’ approach to leadership has earned him deep respect from all members of his staff, close colleagues and from the men and women working on the front line of city operations.”

Bill was praised for his talent in developing a vision for growth and sustainability, then working with various professionals and contractors to implement the vision. Bill also has a reputation for leading with a “boots on the ground” approach, visiting job sites frequently to check on progress and address issues.

During his nearly 10-year tenure with the city, Bill has overseen numerous streets, stormwater and engineering projects, including the downtown water storage project that was named the 2020 Stormwater Project of the Year. He focuses on education for public works employees and has worked with Wilson Community College to develop programs to develop current employees into future leaders.

Bill joined the city of Wilson as City Engineer following a 20-year career at the NC Department of Transportation.

The award is named for Mr. Robert S. Hopson, former Public Works Director for the City of Charlotte. Mr. Hopson served as the Virginia Chapter president in 1962, The national APWA president in 1967 and the North Carolina Chapter president in 1976. Mr. Hopson has Chapter service awards named in his honor in Virginia and NC.  The award has been given to a deserving individual each year since 1993.

Congratulations on the well-deserved award, Bill! We’re so grateful to have you on Team Wilson!
