The City of Wilson is celebrating National Public Power and Natural Gas Week from Oct. 2-8, along with more than 2,000 other community-powered, not-for-profit electric utilities that collectively provide electricity to 49 million Americans.
Wilson Mayor Carlton issued a proclamation at the September 2022 meeting of the Wilson City Council and personally congratulated the leadership of Wilson Energy.
The value of having a locally operated system can be seen during weather events like Hurricane Ian last week. Wilson was able to quickly repair damage to our system because we had local crews on standby, then we were able to give assistance to Danville, Va.
The public can join in the celebration this Wednesday, from 9-11:30 a.m., at the city’s Customer Service Business Center, 208 Nash St. NE.
The Public Power Week Customer Appreciation Day will include refreshments, door prizes, free LED lightbulbs, and a chance to learn more about these topics:
• Online Energy Tools
• Energy Audits
• Load Management
• Gas Safety
• Payment Options
• Outage Reporting
• Greenlight Options
• Environmental Services & Recycling
The city has operated an electric utility for nearly 130 years. The system was created in 1893 for just 3,000 people, and today Wilson Energy serves nearly 36,000 customers including households, businesses and industries. We have more than 1,300 miles of distribution lines. Wilson Energy is the fourth largest municipal distribution system in North Carolina.
Wilson Energy is also one of only eight municipal gas distribution systems in North Carolina and consists of four supply points, ten regulator stations, and over 406 miles of distribution lines that serve over 15,000 customers, making us the third largest municipal gas system in North Carolina.
