Edgecombe County Health Department (ECHD) has served the citizens of Edgecombe County for nearly 100 years. Over the past three decades, ECHD has played a significant role in response and recovery for two historic floods and a global pandemic that has forever changed the landscape of our lives and how we function daily. The pandemic forced ECHD to scale down its services to meet the needs of the community during this time. Now that we are seeing fewer COVID cases, we can switch gears and prepare our workforce to provide needed services to the community as we did prior to the pandemic.
ECHD is eager to bring back services to Edgecombe County and even more delighted to introduce our new provider, Christie Walston, FNP. Having Mrs. Walston as a provider at ECHD is allowing us to expand our services to better serve the residents of Edgecombe County, and the surrounding areas. Mrs. Walston comes to us with a wealth of knowledge and a love for public health. She is a long-time resident of Edgecombe County; graduating from SouthWest Edgecombe High School, and remains in the county, where she lives with her husband and has raised her three children. She attended the University of North Carolina at Wilmington where she received her MSN-Family Nurse Practitioner Concentration. Mrs. Walston’s clinical experience includes Adult, Family and Pediatric Primary Care as well as Women’s Health. Before becoming a Family Nurse Practitioner, Mrs. Walston was an RN in the Emergency Department at ECU-Health Edgecombe Hospital and a School Health Nurse with us, here at ECHD.
Mrs. Walston has a passion for improving the health and wellbeing of children and teenagers, which has been key in planning the reopening of the Edgecombe County Health Department’s Child Health Program. ECHD’s Child Health Program started seeing patients on Monday, November 7, 2022, and has clinic hours of Monday-Friday - 8am-5pm.
Edgecombe County Health Director, Michelle Etheridge, stated, “We are excited to have Mrs. Walston onboard working as our Family Nurse Practitioner! I look forward to working with her to serve the residents of Edgecombe County.”
Mrs. Walston will not only be offering Child Health services, but an array or other services, such as Family Planning, Adult Health, and DOT physicals.
