Tarboro Health and Rehabilitation was identified as the second largest nursing home in Edgecombe County for the opening quarter of 2026, according to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).

The facility maintained a total capacity of 118 beds, which was eight fewer than the county’s average as recorded in the first quarter of 2026. They served an average of 95.7 residents during this time frame.

CMS awarded Tarboro Health and Rehabilitation an overall score of 4 out of 5, surpassing North Carolina’s statewide nursing home average of 2.9.

Edgecombe Health Center by Harborview held the largest capacity in Edgecombe County for the quarter, with 159 beds, while The Lodge at Rocky Mount Health and Rehabilitation was in third place, offering 100 beds.

Tarboro Health and Rehabilitation reported no fines or penalties during the initial quarter of 2026.

There were three for-profit nursing homes operating in Edgecombe County, North Carolina, during this period.

According to U.S. Census Bureau estimates, the country’s population of older adults continues to climb as younger demographics decrease. The United States saw its population aged 65 and above rise by 13% between 2020 and 2024, while the number under age 18 declined by 1.7%. The nation’s older adult population has expanded significantly over the last century, reaching over 61 million in 2024 from 4.9 million in 1920.

A 2021 study found that nearly half of Americans in this age bracket, about 28 million, might need long-term services and support. The same study indicated that over a third could require care in a nursing home over time.

“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, an education group for insurance. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
