Trafficking Heroin Arrest

A traffic stop was conducted on Tuesday, January 31, 2023 by members of the Nash County Sheriff’s Highway Interdiction Team on US 264 near Bailey. Deputies stopped a 2008 Chevrolet truck for a traffic violation. The truck was being driven by Miguel Aburto Canela, of Baltimore Maryland. During the stop reasonable suspicion of criminal activity was developed and a canine was deployed. The canine alerted to the presence of narcotics inside the Chevrolet.

A search of the Chevrolet revealed 4.6 pounds of Heroin hidden in the bed of the truck. Mr. Canela was charged accordingly and taken to the Nash County Sheriff’s Office. The Heroin has a street value of approximately 1 million dollars.

Mr. Canela was charged with Trafficking Heroin and Maintaining a Vehicle/Dwelling for the purpose of narcotics. Mr. Canela was placed in the Nash County Detention Center under a 3-million-dollar bond.

Sheriff Stone stated that he very proud of the dedication shown by the members of the Sheriff’s Office.  They have kept an extremely dangerous drug from reaching our streets.  Heroin, which is typically laced with Fentanyl, has become an epidemic in America and is killing our citizens. Sheriff Stone stated his office will continue to remain vigilant in removing these dangerous narcotics from our streets.

Sheriff Stone wants to commend the following agencies for their assistance; North Carolina Highway Patrol Interdiction team who were instrumental as well as the Drug Enforcement Administration in Raleigh. These partnerships are invaluable to our efforts in reducing crime.
