Wilson Medical Center and Barton College have announced a partnership aimed at strengthening healthcare in Wilson County. The collaboration will launch the Barton College Wilson Medical Fellows Program and involve a $1 million investment in healthcare education.
The initiative addresses the rising demand for healthcare professionals by providing educational opportunities for students pursuing careers in this field. Wilson Medical Center will establish the fellows program, offering clinical training, mentorship, and career development for nursing students. Additionally, a $1 million donation will be made to Barton College’s School of Health Sciences to enhance its programs and resources.
“Wilson Medical Center and Barton College share a commitment to building a strong, sustainable healthcare workforce,” stated Lindy White, interim CEO of Wilson Medical Center. “By working together, we are strengthening healthcare in Wilson by supporting the next generation of professionals who will serve our families, friends, and neighbors.”
The program is set to begin in the 2025-2026 academic year with three nursing students initially participating. This number is expected to increase to eight fellows the following year. Participants will receive tuition support for their junior and senior years and guaranteed employment at Wilson Medical Center after passing the NCLEX exam.
“The partnership between Barton College and Wilson Medical Center is an investment in both education and healthcare,” said Dr. Douglas N. Searcy, President of Barton College. “Our students will benefit from clinical training and mentorship while Wilson Medical Center gains dedicated professionals.”
The financial contribution aims to build a state-of-the-art facility that includes advanced hospital simulation features with an emphasis on rural healthcare. This new facility is expected to strengthen existing programs, support faculty development, expand initiatives like launching a family nurse practitioner program, and meet community needs.
“The Barton College Wilson Medical Fellows Program is a model for how community partners can work together,” commented Rob Boyette, Chairman of the Wilson County Commissioner.“This partnership benefits students and strengthens the healthcare workforce.”
Applications for the first cohort open early 2025 with more information available on Barton College’s website or through upcoming sessions.
