Winter Storm Updates

Storm

City of Wilson  issued the following announcement on Jan. 22.

Saturday Morning Update

So far this has been a perfect winter storm – lots of beautiful snow falling, no ice and very little utility outages. We hope everyone enjoyed watching the snow fall last night and the kids are enjoying some sledding. The dry snow isn’t the best for building snowmen but you can still have fun trying!

Things are looking good in Wilson. Our crews will be out plowing streets and treating to minimize the re-freezing tonight. Most roads are passable but that varies by location. Areas with more shade may stay snowy today. If you must get out, please remember to give our crews the right of way.

Reminder that the Customer Service Center is closed today and RIDE service is not available.

Friday Afternoon Update

The latest forecast shows the snow arriving in Wilson just before 5 p.m. on Friday and continuing until early Saturday morning. Plan to be in place at 4 p.m. today with the supplies you need for a few days. Three to four inches of snow are expected for Wilson. We remain under a Winter Weather Advisory until Sunday at 7 a.m.

No ice is forecast as part of the storm, which is great news for Wilson Energy crews. We will be keeping a close eye on any changing conditions.

Crews have been out all day today pretreating the streets after yesterday’s rain.

We will provide the next update Friday evening once the snow is (hopefully) falling!

Thursday Evening Update

Wilson County is under a Winter Weather Advisory until Sunday at 7 a.m.

All City facilities will be closed to the public on Friday to allow city staff to focus on storm response.

The customer service office on Nash Street will be closed Friday and Saturday.  Other options to pay bills are:

Doing so online at www.WilsonNC.org;

Using the automated system at 399-2200; or

A kiosk has been added in the first drive-thru lane to provide a contactless payment option that takes cash, check and card payments 24 hours a day. Payments through the kiosk apply to City of Wilson utility and Greenlight customer accounts instantly.

The Wilson Dog Park and All-Children’s Playground at Gillette are closed until further notice.

RIDE service is suspended on Friday and Saturday.

Thursday Afternoon Update

We are closely monitoring the forecast, which has changed quite a bit in the last 24 hours. For now, we are preparing for rain tonight which will freeze on roads and surfaces, and frozen precipitation on Friday. Friday will be very cold with a high temperature of 24 degrees. Anything that is on the road tonight will stay frozen until Saturday. We expect this storm to have a multi-day impact.

Public works crews will be on duty 24 hours a day until conditions return to normal. All city salt spreaders and snow plows will be available to clear and treat streets when needed.

We’re watching the forecast closely for any ice accumulation which could cause power outages. Wilson Energy crews are ready to respond to outages as needed. Now is a great time to check out our online outage monitoring and reporting tools at https://www.wilsonnc.org/residents/city-services/all-departments/wilson-energy/report-a-power-outage

We will keep residents informed of street conditions throughout the storm. Please plan to spend the next few hours preparing to be inside for a couple of days and not travel unless it’s absolutely necessary. We will have a street closure map posted online if needed, and urge you to check that if you must travel.

Temperatures will be below freezing for the next few days. To prevent pipes from freezing, cold water should be turned on to drip from any faucet served by exposed pipes. Running water through the pipe – even at a trickle – helps prevent pipes from freezing. If a house will be unoccupied during the next few days, the heat should be kept on set to a temperature no lower than 55° F.
