We want to give a huge shout-out to our own Deputy Elizabeth Cahoon!
She was awarded the North Carolina Law Enforcement Officer of the Year through the American Legion Department of North Carolina today at an awards ceremony in Raleigh. Deputy Cahoon was nominated by Sheriff Keith Stone to the local American Legion Post 110 of Nashville. Deputy Cahoon is an 18 year veteran of the Sheriff’s Office , and is currently assigned to our Civil Division, which is responsible for the operation of the Court system and Courthouse security….but wait, there’s more!!
She is also an active volunteer member of the Nashville Fire Department where she has been a member for the last 12 years. In her free time , she is also the Coordinator of all of our NC Special Olympics projects here at the Sheriff’s Office. In 2021, she led us to an 18th place finish in total money raised for the NC Special Olympics for all law enforcement agencies, and we expect her to improve on that this year.
The American Legion Law and Order Awards recognize the outstanding contributions of top law enforcement, firefighting and emergency medical personnel and units. Once being nominated by the local American Legion Post, her nomination was sent up to the state level where she competed against other law enforcement officers across the state. She was selected as the winner, obviously based on her service to our community. She will now be nominated to compete at the regional level against other law enforcement officers from across the region and then hopefully, on to the nationals for the National Law Enforcement Officer of the Year. We are excited for her, and hope that she continues to move forward in the awards process.
When asked about her award, Deputy Cahoon said, “I am truly honored to represent the American Legion. In my 18 years of law enforcement, I have always strived to serve my community with honor, compassion and diligence. Matthew 5:16 says, ‘in the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works, and give glory to your Father who is in Heaven.’”
Deputy Cahoon is another example of the professional and dedicated law enforcement officers that work at the Nash County Sheriff’s Office. She is the 3rd Deputy to be nominated by the local American Legion Post 110. Previously Chief Deputy Medina was nominated for an award and was awarded as the State Law Enforcement Officer of the Year, and the District Law Enforcement Officer of the Year. Major Miste Strickland was nominated, and was awarded the State Law Enforcement Officer of the Year, District Law Enforcement Officer of the Year, and subsequently was awarded the National Law Enforcement Officer of the Year for the American Legion. We are proud not only of those three, but of all of our Deputies that we have working for our community.
Congratulations to Deputy Cahoon!
